Review - Spirit by: Brigid Kemmerer

Synopsis from Goodreads;

With power comes enemies. Lots of them.

Hunter Garrity just wants to be left alone. He’s learned the hard way that his unusual abilities come at a price. And he can’t seem to afford any allies.

He’s up to his neck in hostiles. His grandfather, spoiling for a fight. The Merrick brothers, who think he ratted them out. Calla, the scheming psycho who wants to use him as bait.

Then there’s Kate Sullivan, the new girl at school. She’s not hostile. She’s bold. Funny. Hot. But she’s got an agenda, too.

With supposedly secret powers rippling to the surface everywhere around him, Hunter knows something ugly is about to go down. But finding out what means he’ll have to find someone he can trust…

My Review

I was kind of iffy on about reading Spirt right away, because I wasn’t sure of Hunter, but I have to say that I am glad I didn’t wait. In the first two books, Hunter seems so calm, collective and self-assured, in Spirt this was not the case. Hunter’s home life is cold and unwelcoming, he doesn’t trust anybody, and he has no idea who he is or whose side he is on. For three-hundred pages I was inside his head and just like Gabriel, there is so much going on and so much confusion, and it’s relatable. My favorite thing about Brigid Kemmerer is that everyone of her characters are believable. All the situations that she puts these boys through are believable and relatable. Their actions, reactions, thoughts and emotions are so real that you can’t help but empathize and fall in love with them. I was never against Hunter, but I also didn’t immediately fall in love with him, but it took only a few chapters to do so. Spirt is an amazing continuum to the Elemental Series filled with ups/downs, fear, confusion, romance and heart break.

I recommend to everybody who reads to pick up the Elemental Series, for there is something for everybody. Buy them at Barnes and Nobel or order them on Kindle, just get your hands on the series, I promise from page one of all Brigid’s books, your heart will pumping and your emotions will be flying, you will laugh and cry and feel for these characters more strongly than any others, but it will be worth it.

Breathless by: Brigid Kemmerer

My Review

Breathless was heart clenchingly beautiful. Brigid’s novella was way too short, but it ended perfectly. Nick’s internal struggle about being gay and confused and scared felt real. The whole book was beautifully written and I loved being inside Nick’s head. After reading Breathless I understand not only Nick, but Quinn as well. During Storm andSpark I didn’t really care for Quinn, but while I was reading Breathless, though it was only a few chapters, those couple pages in her point of view really helped me to understand her.
(My favorite line includes the title)

Favorite Line
“Right now, it left him breathless and uncertain. Because what everyone expected was in direct contradiction with what he wanted.”

Review of Natural Born Angel by: Scott Speer

image

Read Synopsis Here

General

Natural Born Angel started off nine months after Immortal City ended and because of that the characters were already more evolved than the first novel. The book centered around Maddy and her angel transition, but the entire book wasn’t Maddy centric, every few chapters there would be great focus on the approaching war and human/angel conflict. The book ended abruptly with Maddy having to make a choice between Tom (Humans) and Jacks (Angels), Natural Born Angel literally ended right before Maddy chose a side. I hope the next installment picks up immediately after Natural Born Angel instead of nine months after.

Review - Forbidden by: Megan Curd

Forbidden started off well but become boring down the road. I have wanted to read this book for a while and because I haven’t had much luck with books this month I thought that I’d give it a shot. Unfortunately I couldn’t finish this book, not because it was horrible; it was a good book, but because it was boring. Think that it was going to pick up, I attempted to read more, but the story remained tedious.

Synopsis from Goodreads;

4. The number of times my delicate wings have been broken and clamped behind my back.
68. The number inked upon my skin, marking me the sixty-eighth pixie to be stolen.
87. The number of days I’ve been wrongfully imprisoned.
88. The first day the faeries will regret stealing me.

Healthy. Cheery. Vivacious. All traits Rosalie has before becoming enslaved by the faeries to make an endless supply of pixie dust. Now that Rosalie has been traumatized by slave labor, extreme desolate conditions and multiple deaths, this hardened pixie is anything but. When this rebellious teenager attempts an escape, she’s isolated in cramped quarters until she learns her place. Just as she begins to let go of all that hope, she finds an unlikely friend in Jack, the faerie assigned to guard her. Interspecies dating is forbidden in the fae world, so their growing attraction is unacceptable. And even if Jack can find a way to free her, they know the prison is the only place they can truly be together.

I am giving this book ZERO stars. I thought, from the description, I could either love it or hate. This book made me so sick to my stomach that I literally couldn’t finish it. I had no problem with Charlie not being a beauty. I liked that Victoria Scott did the whole “inside beauty” thing, but what I didn’t like was how much time Dante focused on her being ugly. Flat out, I thought Dante was a Douche. It wasn’t just that he was trying to collect her soul, but him as a character overall. I always hate when the “popular/hot” people are only inconsiderate jerks, but with this novel, Victoria Scott took it to a whole new level. I only got as far as I did because I wanted Charlie to have a happy ending, but because of how spiteful and cruel some of Victoria’s characters were, I decided to give up all together. The Collector seemed to me like a less developed, crueler nock-off of Lisa Desrochers Personal Demons Series, and though I would recommend Lisa’s series, I would more likely only bring up this book to warn people off.

Review: Apollyon by: Jennifer L. Armentrout

Synopsis from Goodreads;

Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.

The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.

Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.

Clockwork Princesses Review

My Review:

In a thousand different ways, Clockwork Princess broke, mended and re-broke my heart. Clockwork Princess was beautiful in all it’s sorrow and joy. Cassandra Clare’s works are always beautiful, but Clockwork Princess is by far my favorite. Clare wrapped upThe Infernal Devices Trilogy in the best possible way, and I can not stress enough the beauty of Cassandra Clare’s art, and though that word is not powerful enough to describe her writing, that’s the only word I have. The love triangle between Will, Tessa and Jem was incredible, and never had I expected it to turn out the way it. Cassandra never ceases to amaze me when she writes, I am forever captivated with the words or her and her characters, whether it be the first to fifth time I read her books. Clockwork Princess didn’t disappoint me, it was better than all the previous installments of The Infernal Devices Trilogy and left me completely shell shocked. Though I grieve that one of my favorite series is over, I couldn’t be happier with the way it ended.

Favorite Line:

“She had fallen asleep with her head on his arm, the clockwork angel, still around her throat, resting against his shoulder, just to the left of his collarbone. As she moved away, the clockwork angel slipped free and she saw to her surprise that where it had lain against his skin it had left a mark behind, no bigger than a shilling, in the shape of a pale white star.”

Synopsis from Goodreads;

THE INFERNAL DEVICES WILL NEVER STOP COMING

A net of shadows begins to tighten around the Shadowhunters of the London Institute. Mortmain plans to use his Infernal Devices, an army of pitiless automatons, to destroy the Shadowhunters. He needs only one last item to complete his plan: he needs Tessa Gray.

Charlotte Branwell, head of the London Institute, is desperate to find Mortmain before he strikes. But when Mortmain abducts Tessa, the boys who lay equal claim to her heart, Jem and Will, will do anything to save her. For though Tessa and Jem are now engaged, Will is as much in love with her as ever.

As those who love Tessa rally to rescue her from Mortmain’s clutches, Tessa realizes that the only person who can save her is herself. But can a single girl, even one who can command the power of angels, face down an entire army?

Danger and betrayal, secrets and enchantment, and the tangled threads of love and loss intertwine as the Shadowhunters are pushed to the very brink of destruction in the breathtaking conclusion to the Infernal
Devices trilogy.
